Khan Academy How To Videos

Khan Academy is a video library of how-to math and science videos, founded by a Harvard Business School MBA graduate Salman Khan. It is a non-profit organization aiming to provide free basic education across the globe. I am totally bowled over by this kind of social entrepreneurship. And I am puzzled with the variety of topics covered, from basic math to finance and credit crisis issues!

Their vision statement says “The goal of the Khan Academy (http://www.khanacademy.org or http://youtube.com/khanacademy ) is to use technology to provide a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. It is currently a library of 1176 videos on YouTube (and mirrored elsewhere) covering everything from basic arithmetic to advanced calculus, chemistry, economics and biology. The videos are supplemented by software that dynamically generates exercises and captures data on student usage and progress.”

I chanced upon some of their basic addition and subtraction videos. It is almost like siting in a classrom and listening to a lecture. Nothing fancy, the video’s are shot over an eblackboard, he explains the concepts with patience and clarity, show casing multiple ways to dealing with a said issue.

The videos are directly teaching tens of thousands of students on every continent on a daily basis. Other non-profit groups have even begun distributing off-line versions of the library to rural and underserved areas in Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

Mowgli[The Jungle Book] used to be my favorite serial while growing up Those days we were pretty much at the mercy of Doordarshan. How we would wait for the day and time, prepare, finish up homework. Now, there is on demand tv, almost 24 x 7 sprout, pbs kids, cartoon channels. And if that doesn’t satisfy the apetite, there is always youtube.

My older daughter loves the title song, she got hooked on to it the first time she heard it. Though she does not seem to like the serial itself. She is kind of scared at the animals and characters. Plan to introduce this to her a little later, may be a year later.

Her favorite line is – phool khika hai phool khila hai. No clue why!

Brings back nostalgic memories. Showed it to my daughter few times, she asked what it was all about, but it did not seem to make an impression on her. Will definitely try again in few months.

There she was, watching Jungle Book’s title song for the zillion’th time. Almost always she watches videos with parent supervison. This one time I stepped out of her visual range for few minutes and she managed to click on this video from the related videos listing, thanks to youtube. I heard the song and it caught my attention too. Something in it, the tune, the girl so chulbuli, full of energy. Just too good, loved it. Only when we reached the end of the song, did we realize it was a clinic plus shampoo advertisement. Could not believe it. Well.. who cares, my daughter loves it and I love it.
And it has made my job a little more easy in asking her to wash her hands when she comes into the house from outside. Saves me from her usual question – But, what did I touch? Why are you asking me to wash my hands?

Both my daughters are crazy of this video. My 3 year old understands hindi, but cannot speak hindi. Hardly few words here and there. But she memorized the first part of the song. She plays it so often that my little one squeals when it plays.

We are in the transition phase of moving from one country to another. In the meantime, youtube has been a savior in entertaining kids. While looking for nursery rhymes based videos that my kids are familiar with, I hit upon this site – http://www.supersimplesongs.com/ . There are a handful of their videos available in youtube. Their ABC song, Five little Monkeys and Rain Rain Go Away were an instant hit.
