There are 14 Types of Children Books, So Stop Calling Them Children Books!
Do you know what children book really mean? We know them when we go to bookstore to buy one but I can bet we don’t put much thought into what exact type of children books we want. There is a tendency among parents to just pick the popular books or the ones most aggressively pushed by store owners. Very few parents take time to build balanced collection of different types of books for their kids. Well that’s the challenge I put to myself and found that I don’t know much about this topic. So I did what any geek dad will do – hit the net and do some research.
There are many types of children books, they come in different packaging, targeting different age groups, serve different purpose and pack different attitude. Let’s run through all –
baby books
board books
picture books (fiction)
picture books (non-fiction)
picture book(older readers 7-12 years)
easy to read books(5-7)
early chapter books
middle grade fiction(8 to 12 years)
middle grade nonfiction(8 to 12 years)
chapter books(non-fiction)
teenage or youth adult fiction/ YA (12 years and up)
teenage or youth adult nonfiction/YA(12 years and up)

poetry
plays
Those are 14 types of children books. I am not going to touch on new animals like digital books and maybe app books.
Stepping out of the house, will come back and expand on these categories!
